History of Northeast Tech
Northeast Tech—originally established as Northeast Area Vocational-Technical School District Number Eleven—was formed by a majority vote of the citizens in Mayes, Craig, Rogers, and Ottawa counties on February 4, 1969. The first Board of Education included Dave Hutchison, Carl Mustain, Samuel Victor, Ralph Boatright, and Jack Kissee. Earl Kelly was appointed as the district’s first superintendent, and the administrative offices were set up at 122 South Scraper in Vinita.
In 1969, the board selected two campus sites—one near Pryor and the other near Afton—based on population, proximity to industry, access to utilities and emergency services, and student travel distances. Fifty acres north of Afton were purchased from Ogden Phipps for $50,000, and 110 acres west of Pryor were purchased from Mrs. Rhea Lawson for $33,000.
Funding for construction came from the Economic Development Administration, the Ozarks Regional Commission, the State of Oklahoma, and a local bond issue of $821,000, approved by voters on June 23, 1970.
On September 22, 1970, voters in Delaware County communities including Grove and Cleora approved annexation into the district, extending Northeast Tech’s service area to include parts of five counties.
Construction began in July 1971. By February 1972, building was underway with Fritz Construction Company of Vinita contracted for the Afton Campus and Peevy Construction Company of Tulsa for the Pryor Campus. Both campuses opened their doors on August 27, 1973. Dedication ceremonies were held on September 23, 1973, with Senator Dewey Bartlett presiding at Afton and Congressman Clem McSpadden at Pryor. Approximately 1,000 patrons toured the new facilities at each campus.
The district experienced steady growth in the following decades. In 1988, the name was changed to Northeast Vo-Tech Center, reflecting a broader vision. On March 2, 1993, voters in seven southern Delaware County districts approved annexation, expanding the district to 38 school districts across five counties. The Kansas Campus ("East") opened on August 19, 1996, with formal dedication on September 22.
In 1999, the district was renamed Northeast Technology Center to align with new directions from the Oklahoma Department of Vocational and Technical Education and to emphasize its role in economic and workforce development.
In 2007, construction began on the district’s fourth campus in Claremore to serve Rogers County students and local industries. The Claremore Campus officially opened on June 12, 2009, with five full-time programs and evening classes. In 2015, the district's central administration offices moved to Elliott Street in Pryor, and the former administrative site at MidAmerica Industrial Park was converted into a Business & Industry Training Center.
To strengthen brand consistency statewide, the district shortened its name to Northeast Tech in 2017.
In 2024, Northeast Tech expanded its Business & Industry Services (BIS) with a new facility in Grove—BIS at Grand Lake—serving as a hub for business training, entrepreneurship, conferences, and an incubator for small businesses.
In fall 2025, the district will open the Northeast Tech Workforce Training Hub in downtown Pryor. This facility will house business development trainers and various Northeast Tech support staff—offering a central, accessible location for professional training and district operations.
Today, Northeast Tech serves students across eight counties with full-time campuses in Afton, Claremore, Kansas, and Pryor. Each year, more than 1,200 students enroll in full-time programs. An additional 20,000 individuals receive training annually through Business & Industry Services and short-term adult education classes.
