Practical Nursing - Afton
** BREAKING NEWS ** The Afton campus has been approved by the OK Board of Nursing as an INDIVIDUALIZED OPTION format beginning July 1, 2024. This learning environment is best for those students who desire the flexibility of attending nursing school while being able to have a life outside of the classroom because students are not in the classroom Monday through Friday as in a traditional program. This new format for the Afton campus will give the PN student up to 15-months to complete the program. This type of format also allows admission of new cohorts to the program every 3-4 months, when openings are available. Admission months will typically be July, October, January and April each year.
Opportunities for the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) are abundant and projected to grow. The LPN works under the supervision or direction of a registered nurse, licensed physician or dentist. The Practical Nursing program at Northeast Tech prepares students for this rewarding field. This 1463-hour program is open only to those individuals who hold a high school diploma or GED. The program must be completed in 12 to 15 months and blends classroom, laboratory skills, and simulation with actual on-the-job experience in clinical settings.
Students will learn the scope of practice and the roles of the LPN, which include 1) contributing to the assessment of the health status of individuals and groups, 2) participating in the development and modification of the plan of care, 3) implementing and documenting the appropriate aspects of the plan of care while providing safe and effective direct and/or indirect nursing care, 4) participating in the evaluation of patients’ responses to interventions, 5) continued self-development, 6) delegating such tasks as may safely be performed by others, consistent with educational preparation and that do not conflict with the Oklahoma Nursing Practice Act, and 7) developing the awareness of how LPNs, as professionals, can have a voice in health care change.
Individuals who successfully complete the course will be eligible to take the NCLEX-PN for licensure after approval through the Board of Nursing.
Classroom Hours - 8:00-11:30 ~ 12:30-3:30 - clinical hours will vary based upon clinical site

The following classes are not prerequisites but will give students advanced standing in the program. A&P is worth 6 points on your application and Nursing Concepts is worth 2 points on your application. You must have a minimum of 18 points to be placed in the applicant pool.

- Reading Comprehension (53 questions)—Assesses comprehension skills, such as identifying main ideas, finding the meaning of words in context, making inferences, and identifying key and supporting details
- Grammar (55 questions) - Assesses all eight parts of speech, including adjectives and adverbs
- Vocabulary and General Knowledge (55 questions)—Assesses knowledge of basic vocabulary terms that are commonly used in both general English speaking and in the health care fields
- Mathematics (55 questions)—Assesses math skills needed for health care fields, such as basic numeric operations, fractions, decimals, ratios and proportions, household measures, and general algebra skills
