Marine Technician Shortage: How Donny Roe Found Solutions 300 Miles Away

Marine technicians are in short supply, a fact Donny Roe from Wichita Falls, Texas, discovered firsthand when he traveled over 300 miles seeking mechanical assistance for his boat at Northeast Tech Afton Campus.

Roe purchased a 1994 Bass Cat Pantera II knowing it required work. After attempting to have it repaired at a local marina without success, he began exploring alternative options.

"I parked the boat in the barn for a while as I explored other options," said Roe. "I knew I needed either someone who knew more about boats or someone with better equipment."

This led him to the idea of seeking assistance from a marine technology instructor. The options were few, but he compiled a list of schools in Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Florida.

"The first school I contacted was Northeast Tech since it was the closest, and I was delighted when Travis informed me that his program could address my needs," he added. "Upon entering the shop, it became evident that there was excellent equipment, and Travis was an exceptional instructor."

One aspect that particularly impressed Row about NT’s Marine Service Technology program was the hands-on training students received. From inception to completion, students engaged with Roe as part of the customer experience.

"Travis aims to teach them how to operate a business, not just repair a boat," he remarked. "If I were a youngster, I would consider this program. He is preparing his students for a career."

Roe traveled back to Afton to pick up his boat and made plans to fish on Grand Lake before heading home. As a token of appreciation, he took the class out for lunch.

Northeast Tech's Afton Campus offers the only Marine Service Technology program of its kind in the state, providing training that prepares students for success in the lucrative marine industry. The program offers a two-year curriculum for high school students and a one-year program for adults.
