Northeast Technology Center’s Kansas Campus played host to students competing in this year’s SkillsUSA Regional Welding Fabrication Competition, and it would be the NTC Afton high school team that laid claim to one of the top spots.
“I was really proud of my guys during the competition,” said NTC Afton Welding Instructor Corey Winesburg. “This jack stand project has a lot of torch cutting, and it’s a tough one to fit up and build. My high school team is all first year students, but they put a lot of effort into preparing for their project. In the end, it paid off for them."
The SkillsUSA Welding Fabrication Competition is a team event that requires three students from each school to use their skills to build a project from the given materials and blue prints. Several different welding and cutting processes are used during the competition, and students must work together to complete the project during the allotted time. The teams are divided into two categories: high school and post-secondary.
Josh Alley, the welding instructor at NTC Kansas, was both host and competitor this year as his high school students competed on their home turf.
“It’s a lot of work to organize this event, but I like it that my guys get to compete in the shop they practice in every day,” Alley said. “They are familiar with the atmosphere, there are more familiar faces here, and that cuts down on their stress.”
The Kansas team faced an early obstacle when one of their teammates called in sick and the back-up competitor was pulled into action. Despite the last minute casting change, the newly formed team did well and placed third in the competition. NTC Afton’s team of post-secondary students also performed well placing second in their category.
Only the teams that place first advance to the next round of competition. In total, NTC will have three students from the Afton Welding Program competing at the SkillsUSA State Welding Fabrication Competition. Those students include:
- Cy Bruening of Grove – 1st Place High School
- Spencer Cook of Grove – 1st Place High School
- Armando Montor of Commerce – 1st Place High School
