Stylist Racheal Free, an NTC aluma, spent time talking about chemistry and career options with the cosmetology students at NTC Pryor. Free is the owner and operator of FreeStylin’ Hair Salon in Pryor, and she also works for Farouk Systems Inc. as a CHI educator, regional trainer and platform artist.
Hands-on learning, reasonable class sizes and instructors with work experience in what they’re teaching – the learning environment at Northeast Technology Center is already structured for student success, but there’s one other factor that plays an important role.
“I try to incorporate professionals into my classroom instruction whenever possible, because it gives my students a better learning experience,” said NTC Pryor Cosmetology Instructor Debbie Qualls. “There are a number of different career paths within cosmetology, and I want my students to understand their options.”
Students in Qualls’ class benefit from the variety of guest speakers she invites into her classroom, and her most recent guest was stylist Racheal Free. Free is the owner and operator of FreeStylin’ Hair Salon in Pryor, but she also works for Farouk Systems Inc. as a CHI educator, regional trainer and platform artist.
A graduate of the NTC Cosmetology Program, Free spent her time with the students talking about the chemistry of hair color treatment and application. She also touched briefly on the scientific laws of color before giving the students an opportunity to test some of the CHI products in a styling demonstration.
“You need to know about the products available to you as a stylist so you can make sure you’re using the products that best meet the needs of your clients,” Free said to the students. “You also want to do everything you can to make sure you’re using your time efficiently. Using time wisely means you can see more customers which means more money in your pocket. It’s fun, but it’s business.”
Free’s cosmetology training has provided her with the opportunity to travel and work in a number of different settings, and the wide variety of career options available to students was a key point of Free’s presentation.
“Don’t limit yourself just because you’re from Pryor, Oklahoma,” Free said. “You can travel, work on a movie set, open your own shop – anything you want.”
The Cosmetology Program at NTC Pryor is one of only four programs in the state to boast a 100% pass rate for students taking their state board exams. As one of NTC’s most popular programs, classes fill up quickly, and enrollment for next year is already underway.
